The dog days of summer have arrived and we want to make the most of the last few weeks of summer and try and fit that one last vacation in before we have to once again contend with schedules and darker, colder days. Expectations can become high as we want the time to be fun and memorable, however the reality of the vacation can be disappointing. Here are some tips of how to make the vacation you have planned a great experience.
First, set expectations before you go. Find out what everyone involved would like to get out of the time together. Ask each person what one activity would mean the most to them and make sure each person has a chance to do that one activity. Also, remember people don’t just bring their best selves on vacation. Be prepared for the normal arguments and personality quirks and accept them as part of the experience. Perfection cannot be found, even in a vacation.
Second, communicate. Be willing to share what it is you want and need along the way and be receptive to others letting you know what they want and need. When communicating say things like, “I’m really tired and a need to take a break today.” instead of saying “If you make me go on one more tour I’m going to lose my mind.” Accusing or blaming only puts the other person on the defensive and does not allow room for negotiation or understanding. Learn to express your own feelings about the situation and ask for what you need.
Take care of you. Don’t forget to take care of your needs while away. We can neglect things like good nutrition, exercise, and taking mental breaks all for the sake of the trip. However, if we don’t have energy then we cannot care for those around us nor will we have the ability to deal with the minor pitfalls that may occur. Finding little ways to take time out and stay energized makes the vacation more enjoyable for everyone.
Pack the essentials. You’ve got your tooth brush, but did you remember your sense of humor and your patience? Even the best planned vacation is subject to minor inconveniences such as traffic problems, plane delays, lost reservations or just forgetting to pack the favorite toy. Also, spending so much time together in smaller spaces is bound to bring attention to annoying habits. Having a sense of humor about the setbacks and being patient with the other people’s habits will keep from robbing you of the joy of having the experience together. Remember, whatever is happening at the moment is going to make for a really great story later.
You can make the most of these last days of summer with the right attitude and practice. Focus on the good and let the bad go. You won’t remember that part anyway.
